United have been linked with 28 year-old midfielder Perez in the past and, despite their huge issues in defence, it would appear that van Gaal is also not totally convinced by his central midfield options, leading him to the door of the tireless and creative Argentina international Enzo Perez.

Perez is believed to have a £23.5m release clause in his contract at the Estadio de Luz and, despite this seeming like a significant sum of money for a player of that age, van Gaal is reportedly willing to meet the player’s clause to ensure that he is able to secure new blood as soon as possible when the transfer window reopens.

Having signed the likes of Marcos Rojo, Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao in the summer transfer window, Perez would be joining a rapidly increasing South American community at Old Trafford, but United fans will be hoping that van Gaal also has his eye on defensive reinforcements as well as additional midfielders.
