The 23 year old Spanish international is seen by the Bernabeu side as an ideal long term replacement for Iker Casillas and Real Madrid feel confident they can lure the former Atletico man back to his hometown if Man United once again fail to secure a Champions League berth.

Though Man United have struggled under new boss Louis van Gaal it would be fair to say that de Gea has been one of the club’s most consistent performers.

That form helped de Gea to oust Casillas as Spain’s first choice starter in recent Euro 2016 action and if Man United were to not secure a top four finish then perhaps a move back to Madrid becomes all the more likely.

De Gea is tied down to a Man United contract until 2016 though his source believes that Real Madrid will hope to bring in the keeper on a ‘cut-price deal’, which seems unlikely not least as the Premier League side paid a hefty £18m for the custodian back in 2011.
