Reds captain Gerrard went public last week saying the club he has stayed loyal to throughout his career need to come up with a new deal before the end of the season.

However, Liverpool’s American owners are said to be unwilling to match his current £180,000-per-week wages, believing that he is no longer capable of demanding such a fee as his influence on the pitch continues to diminish.

Instead they have put on the table a two-year-contract that will pay £90,000-a-week for the first season, dropping to £60,000-a-week in the final 12 months.

There is also an option within the offer for him to become a part of the club’s coaching staff or an ambassador in 2017, depending on which route he wants to take when he decides to finally hang up his boots.
