Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is mulling over making another offer for Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar, according to the Daily Mail.

Wenger is desperate to bolster his backline in the wake of Tuesday’s 3-3 draw with Anderlecht – a game which saw them concede three times in the last 30 minutes to surrender a seemingly dominant lead.

The Gunners were keen on signing Dutch centre-back Vlaar in the summer, after he excelled during the 2014 World Cup.

Vlaar was seen as an ideal replacement for former club captain Thomas Vermaelen, who left Arsenal to join Barcelona in August.

However, a deal to sign the 29-year-old Villa star never materialised, leaving the Gunners very short of options at the back.

Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker are currently the only recognised senior centre-backs at the Emirates Stadium, meaning that teenage full-back Calum Chambers has had to fill in frequently.

Wenger will certainly move for a new centre-back in January. Vlaar seems to be his first choice, although the Frenchman is also a fan of Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk.

If Arsenal do pursue Vlaar, they are likely to face competition from Premier League rivals Manchester United, who have their own serious issues in defence.

Injuries and a lack of depth have seen United hand six appearances to shaky teenage centre-back Tyler Blackett this season, while equally raw youngster Patrick McNair has featured three times.
