The Reds are keen to speed up a deal to sign youngster Divork Origi, who is currently on loan at the Ligue 1 side for the rest of this season after agreeing to sign for Liverpool in the summer.

However, the Belgian international is not due to link up with Brendan Rodgers’ squad until the start of next season, with Liverpool looking like failing in their efforts to persuade Lille to let him go now with the promise of offloading Balotelli in return.

Balotelli’s poor form at Anfield is part of the reason Rodgers wants to sign Origi now, but it now looks like these rumours have been put to bed by Girard, who cannot see the Italian international making the step down to a smaller club, despite his disappointing recent form.

The 24-year-old was brought in for £16m this summer to replace the departing Luis Suarez, but has so far failed to register a single Premier League goal and has come in for much criticism for his performances.
