Fresh off the back of an outstanding performance during the Champions League defeat to Real Madrid, Toure is a likely starter for Saturday’s game at Anfield, where his side will be looking to exact some revenge.

The Blues dealt the Merseyside giants a terminal blow in last year’s title race, with their 2-0 success eventually allowing Manchester City to take their second title in three seasons.

As the Daily Mirror explains, Toure was a shock choice in a line-up that inspired much criticism for manager Brendan Rodgers on Tuesday, but his calm assurance not only justified the selection, but also put him in contention to face the Premier League leaders, barely months after it seemed his Liverpool life was over.

He has some extra motivation too, in helping his club end an impressive Chelsea unbeaten record that has swept them to the top of the league, because he was part of the Arsenal invincible side that Mourinho’s team are already being compared to.

Speaking about the upcoming fixture, he said: “They cost us the league, and now we have the chance to beat them – I can’t wait for that, honestly. Is it a chance for payback? Definitely.

“It’s a very important game when you think what they did to us last season. And it’s a great chance to end any argument about them being invincibles too. But the most important thing is we want to win the game.”
