Van Persie has struggled this season to find the form that has seen him regarded as one of the best strikers in the world and manager Louis van Gaal is looking to alternatives to the 31-year-old.

Wilson has impressed van Gaal since the Dutchman arrived at Old Trafford over the summer and the 63-year-old thinks the teenager deserves his chance in the starting XI.

The 18-year-old scored twice on his United debut last term in a 3-1 victory over Hull City and also looked lively after he replaced van Persie in the derby loss to Manchester City on Sunday.

Wilson has also been in good form for the Under-21s in 2014/15, scoring six goals to date and it’s understood he was hauled off early in the team’s last outing to ensure he was fresh for the weekend’s game against Palace.

Van Persie meanwhile has managed just three strikes in all competitions this campaign and with Radamel Falcao also struggling with a calf injury, it could be an all-English strike force with captain Wayne Rooney also likely to start.
