Along with the usual faces there is a recall for West Ham United midfielder Stewart Downing – who has not played for the Three Lions since 2012 – and a potential debut for West Bromwich Albion forward Saido Berahino.

Both players have been in fine form for their respective clubs in the Premier League this season and this is perhaps a sign from Hodgson that he is prepared to select stars who don’t play for the so-called ‘big’ sides.

Here is the squad in full:

Ross Barkley, Michael Carrick and Theo Walcott have all be named despite all three having only just returned from injuries and many would argue that both Rickie Lambert and Andros Townsend are very lucky to be included after distinctly average campaigns to date.

The biggest absence is Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge, who is still struggling with a calf injury sustained whilst with the national squad back in August.
