Costa Rica star Campbell was one of the most impressive performers at this summer’s World Cup in Brazil and had been tipped to play a leading role for the Gunners this season.

However, the 22-year-old has spent the majority of his time away from the club on numerous loan spells and has started just one game under Wenger – September’s Capital One Cup defeat to Southampton in September.

Reports this week emerged claiming Campbell wanted to make a swift exit in the new year, but Wenger quickly moved to reiterate his desire to keep hold of him for a while longer.

Asked if Campbell was still part of his long-term plans, Wenger said: “Yes, of course.

“But I cannot guarantee the happiness of every player. I try to make everybody happy.

“I personally love Joel Campbell and have a big respect for him and I wish every day that he is happy from morning till evening.

“We have all got to deal with our problems.”
