Reports on Goal.com confirm that the two midfielders played through the pain barrier in the lunchtime fixture, and could both now face a spell on the sidelines.

Fabregas is suffering with a hamstring injury while Ramires is battling an adductor problem, and Mourinho has praised his two players, as well as his medical department, for taking the “gamble”.

“The team as a team, players as individuals, I think all of them gave a great performance and had the game under control,” he said after the match.

“One point at Anfield, which normally every team would accept as a fantastic result, the team didn’t accept that and came out in the second half to win the game so I’m really, really pleased.

“Every player was fantastic, but I need to tell you about Fabregas and Ramires. They both played injured. Maybe we will lose them for a match or two but they put themselves out there for the team.

“I think it’s fair for me to give a word to Ramires and Fabregas and also to my medical department. The medical department did fantastic work on them and they were fantastic to resist the problems that they had.

“Fabregas, in this moment, I think maybe is a problem for the next match because we gambled everything on a hamstring problem and the medical department took the risk together with me, so a special word for them and for Ramires and Fabregas.

“Ramires’ is the same adductor injury. He knew it was important I started with him, and Fabregas is a fantastic professional. He gambled.”

Mourinho has also risked another injury war with Spain by insisting that Fabregas should not join up with them for their upcoming fixtures against Belarus and Germany: “No he can’t go, well he can if he wants, but he can’t.”
