The former midfielder was full of criticism over Arsenal’s defending as they surrendered a 3-0 lead at home to Anderlecht in the Champions League this week, conceding three times late on to eventually draw the match that looked like heading toward a comfortable victory.

However, Wenger has not taken his fomer player’s comments well, citing his lack of top-level management experience and calling his opinions a ‘joke’ that he is not interested in hearing.

An angry Wenger added that managing Merson was difficult, with the ex-England star leaving Highbury shortly after the Frenchman took charge in the late 90s.

“I managed him. I tried. I’m not interested in Paul Merson,” he said. “These debates I hear are a joke, a farce. People who have managed altogether zero games, they teach everybody how you should behave. It’s a farce.

“Honestly, I cannot even be upset about it. People criticise without any proven fact, just because they love to criticise. It’s much more about bitterness than any real objective facts.”

Arsenal will look to get back to winning ways today as they travel to Swansea City in the Premier League, though defence could be a concern again due to so many injuries suffered at the back this season.

It has been suggested that the north London giants will look to fix this problem in the upcoming January transfer window, with Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels expected to snub a move to Manchester United in favour of joining Arsenal.
