The former Blue spoke on Italian TV about his time under the ex-Chelsea and Tottenham manager, claiming that his side were willing to do more for Di Matteo.

“People worked harder for Robbie [Di Matteo] than Andre Villas-Boas,” Cole said.

This is perhaps understandable in many ways, as the Italian was not only a former Chelsea player himself, but was also the assistant manager at the club before taking over in 2012.

Cole and the rest of the squad no doubt built up a rapport with the former Italian international, and would have had great respect for what he had done both as a player and as a manager during his time in West London.

Di Matteo managed to win the Champions League during his short spell in charge of the club, while Villas Boas was an unmitigated disaster and was quickly replaced by owner Roman Abramovich.
