The Serbian was re-signed for £21 million from Benfica in January, having been sold to them three years previously as part of a swap deal for David Luiz.
The 26-year-old has been an ever present for the Londoners this season, and a key part of the side that tops the league. They are also currently unbeaten in all competitions.
His manager described him as giant not only for his size but for the way that he plays.
“He is the best player. He was signed in the most difficult market. Which is for the players who are coming in mid-season, so the last half of the season was for him to improve, not adaptation, as he was a Chelsea player before, but to improve.
“At this moment he is a giant, not for his size but for the way he plays. The man is a giant.”
These comments show that Mourinho believes the defensive midfielder is better than summer signings Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa, as well as superstar winger Eden Hazard.
The 51-year-old coach also claimed that his team has the same mentality of his other championship winning sides, including the one from last time he was Blues manager.
“I had it in Inter, Porto and Madrid and I have it here. I had it here in my first spell and I have it now, and this is something that I always have, people who are willing to sacrifice for the team, people who are willing to push, push to help, so I am so pleased with that.”
