Manchester United could be about to complete a surprise swoop to sign former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes on a free transfer, according to the Daily Express.

The Red Devils are not in desperate need of a new signing in goal, but have had the Spanish international training with them recently as he looks to return to full fitness after a lengthy spell out with injury.

Valdes has previously been regarded as one of the best in the world in his position, having starred during his long and successful career at the Nou Camp before deciding to run his contract down and take on a new challenge this season.

Valdes had looked likely to be joining Liverpool earlier this term, but a move never materialised, which could now put United in the driving seat to snap him up and add him to their squad.

Louis van Gaal could do with a quality backup player to provide serious competition for David de Gea, though the 32-year-old may struggle to displace his fellow countryman as the club’s number one.

United signed a great number of new players during the summer and could make Valdes their latest big-name addition at Old Trafford.
