Arsenal fans have been demanding that Arsene Wenger buy a top defensive midfielder for years now, and their defensive failings have illustrated the need for one more so now than ever.

Although Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini appear no longer to be up to the task, Groves believe the Gunners already have the solution in Calum Chambers.

“Calum Chambers has been a fantastic buy,” Ghe said.

“He could play as holding midfielder when he gets to 22 or 23.

“He has the technique, physical stature and passing ability.

“I think he will be more of a Matic. He’s someone who can protect the back four and he is athletic, has good vision and a good passing range.”

Nemanja Matic has been vital for Chelsea this season, and Groves claims that Chambers has the potential to emulate the Serbian midfield destroyer at Arsenal.

Following the teenagers’s £16m move from Southampton this summer, Wenger revealed that his versatility was a key factor in the player’s appeal.

Although injuries have forced the Frenchman to utilise him mostly at right-back, he sees the young Englishman being deployed as a centre-back or a midfielder in the future.
