Gunners boss Wenger has made a new centre half top priority on his shopping list with a holding midfielder likely to follow next summer.

The pressure will be on Wenger to bring in a new centre-back as injury has ravaged his back line this season and he has now realised the mistake of not replacing the now departed Belgian international Thomas Vermaelen.

Arsenal have got Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk and Manchester United defender Chris Smalling on their hit list while Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar could be available on the cheap, though many would urge him to pay the required cost if it meant moving Nacho Monreal from his makeshift coverage in the heart of the defence.

They are unlikely to be able to arrant any bigger names until the summer, when more funds will be made available.
