United will ditch current second choice Anders Lindegaard in the new year and bring Valdes in to battle it out with David de Gea for the number one spot between the sticks at Old Trafford.

The 32-year-old stopper is currently available as a free transfer since leaving Barcelona at the end of the previous campaign and has been training with United to get himself back to full fitness.

Mata said yesterday: “I speak regularly with Victor Valdes, he’s training with us.

“We’re waiting to see what his plans are.”

Valdes yesterday hinted he was close to completing a move.

He said: “Great training session Today. Almost Ready!

“Thanks for your supportive messages throughout these months. They have helped me a lot!”

The pair were teammates in the Spanish national team that lifted the World Cup in 2010.
