The Dutchman hasn’t managed to hit the same heights he did in his first season at United, and doubts have arisen over the 31-year-old’s future.

United don’t normally drastically extend the contracts of players over the age of 30, but due to Radamel Falcao’s ongoing injury concerns, manager Louis Van Gaal is ready to show his support for his compatriot.

The former Arsenal star recorded United’s moment of the season so far with his injury time equaliser in the draw with league leaders Chelsea last month, and it is hoped that a new deal could spark him into life and send him on his way to recapturing that form of his first season.

It is thought that the talks over the new deal will begin in the new year.
