Costa is joined on the sidelines by fellow Blues star Cesc Fabregas and their absence has been met with criticism from the rest of the Spain squad.

Casillas and Ramos in particular know Jose Mourinho well from his time at Madrid and the Los Blancos duo suspect the Portuguese manager has been pressurising his players to drop out of international duty.

Mourinho made his feelings very clear about his players’ dedication to the national team, so the pair know all too well that their former boss will do everything he can to convince his players to choose club over country.

Despite being a fan favourite and a loyal servant for his entire career, the Madrid shot-stopper was dropped by the 51-year-old for much of his time at the club in favour of Diego Lopez.
