The misfiring Merseyside forward was injured in training earlier this week, and after failing to recover he has been sent back to England to receive further treatment.

24-year-old Balotelli will miss Sunday’s Euro 2016 qualifying match against Croatia, as well as the match against Albania the following Tuesday.

This will certainly be a bitter blow for the player himself, who was named in the Italian squad for the first time under new boss Antonio Conte.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will also be concerned, with Daniel Sturridge already out injured he can scarcely afford to lose another striker; no matter how bad the player’s form has been recently.

Sturridge may be fit for a return to action against Crystal Palace next weekend, but Rodgers may be hesitant to rush either of them back for fear of aggravating their injuries.
