Vertonghen has started just six of Tottenham’s 11 Premier League games this season, with Younes Kaboul and summer signing Federico Fazio preferred at centre-back.

Last season the Belgian was deployed at left-back during an injury crisis, but with Danny Rose fit and Ben Davies being bought in over the summer he now faces more competition in every area of the pitch.

Fazio has already been sent off twice in his short career at White Hart Lane, and with both he and Kaboul prone to plenty of defensive errors it is a mystery how Vertonghen doesn’t feature in Pochettino’s plans.

“I want to play every game but this manager, Pochettino, has a different approach, he likes to give everyone the time to play and settle in,” he said.

A player of Vertonghen’s quality understandably expects to be playing week in and week out for his club, so he surely can’t be happy with his current situation.

If things stay the same then Spurs run the risk of losing a quality defender, with the 27-year-old surely not short of suitors if he were to look for a move away in January.
