The 25-year-old became the most expensive player of all time when he completed a reported £85m move from White Hart Lane to the Bernabeu, but United are known to have been desperate to bring him to Old Trafford.

Barcelona were also interested in signing Bale at the time, but his agent Jonathan Barnett has explained that his client had his heart set on a move to Real ahead of all other options available to him at the time.

Bale has gone on to prove a hit with the Spanish giants, helping the club to glory in the Copa Del Rey and Champions League last season, scoring in both final victories against Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Still, recent speculation has seen the Wales international wide-man linked with a surprise move away from the club already, and the player’s agent has given an interview revealing quite how in-demand his client has been in recent times.

Bale’s rejection of offers elsewhere suggests he is unlikely to leave Real so soon, with Barnett saying: “He always wanted to play for Madrid. He could have gone to United and other clubs, but he wanted Madrid. I know that at one time Barcelona were also interested in him, but he said he did not want to go there.

Asked if the Red Devils offered more money, he said: “Not much more, but more.”
