The projected move will cost the Anfield side £30m and is now deemed a necessity following the poor form shown by new arrivals Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert, neither of whom has registered a Premier League goal this term.

Brendan Rodgers has also been without Daniel Sturridge for an extended period and the lack of a cutting edge in the final third is in danger of ruining Liverpool’s season so one can well see why the Merseyside outfit would be ready to dig deep to land Martinez.

The 28 year old Colombian has been a big hit since moving to Portugal in July 2012, netting 72 goals in 107 appearances for FC Porto but could well be tempted by a fresh challenge, not least as his side lost their Primeira Liga title to arch rivals Benfica last term.
