Reds losing patience with Glen Johnson.

Liverpool are set to replace right back Glen Johnson in the January transfer window with the signing of experienced Uruguayan international Maxi Pereira, report the Express, as the Reds look unlikely to extend the contract of the former Chelsea defender beyond the end of the season.

Pereira played for Uruguay at the summer World Cup and the 30 year-old has been one of the continent’s most consistent full back performers for a number of years, but is set to leave Portuguse champions Benfica at the end of the season as he has no plans to extend his own contract at the Estade de Luz.

Liverpool attempted to sign Pereira in the summer and were in discussions over a move for the experienced international, but Brendan Rodgers wasn’t impressed with the price being demanded by Jorge Jesus’ side and opted to bring in young Spaniard Javier Manquillo on loan from Atletico Madrid instead.

Johnson has been first choice right back at Anfield for a number of years since moving to the club from Stamford Bridge, but the England international has often been criticised for his lack of defensive prowess in the last couple of seasons and it would appear that Rodgers is looking to bring in a more solid replacement.
