The Welshman signed for Real Madrid in a world record £85 million deal in August 2013, but he was also wanted by the then Premier League champions before the transfer was finalised.

However, the now 25-year-old apparently already had his heart set on a move to the Spanish capital. The higher wages offered by the Old Trafford club were not enough to turn him away from becoming a Galactico.

“He always wanted to play for Madrid,” Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett said to AS. “He could have gone to United and other clubs, but he wanted to go to Madrid.”

On the size of the wage offered by the Red Devils, he said, “Not much more, but more.”

The ex Tottenham player’s agent also claimed that Barcelona were interested at the time. “I know that at one time Barcelona were also interested in him, but he said he did not want to go there. There were two agents who called me.”

Bale has been a success since signing for Los Blancos, scoring 28 goals in 58 appearances. He has recently come back from injury and scored in their match against Rayo Vallecano before the international break.
