Emirates Stadium side prepare move for Vicente Calderon striker.
Arsenal are readying a surprise move for Atletico Madrid forward Mario Mandzukic according to the Daily Star.
The Croatian international only moved to the Vicente Calderon in July and though he hasn’t been an instant hit it would be something of a surprise if Diego Simeone would consider selling the former Bayern Munich man quite so soon.
This source claims that Simeone’s interest in Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi may lead to Manduzkic’s possible departure and the new signing has confirmed that there were Premier League offers on the table prior to his move to the Spanish capital.
“I had better offers than from Atletico.
“There were calls from the UK that interested me”
However Mandzukic is seemingly happy with life at Atletico, adding;
“I’m very pleased with everything. I couldn’t choose a better path after leaving Bayern Munich. The fans here accepted me immediately.
“Atletico was the best possible decision for me at this stage of my career.”
Despite criticism Mandzukic has racked up a healthy tally of eight goals in 15 appearances for Atletico Madrid since his move to the La Liga champions.
One wonders quite where Mandzukic would fit into Arsene Wenger’s plans, not least as new signings Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez have both made immediate impacts in north London, though could perhaps be considered a replacement for injured Frenchman Olivier Giroud.
