Manchester City Hope To Trump Arsenal Bid For Serie A Wing-Back

A surprise new contender for the Swiss international has been suggested in Italy.

Manchester City are reportedly chasing Juventus full-back Stephan Lichtsteiner, and hope to snap up the wing-back before Arsenal can act on their reported interest.

Tuttosport have alleged that Manuel Pellegrini is keen on the Swiss defender because of his ability to play in several positions. Lichtsteiner is experienced at the top level, and out of contract in the summer to boot.

City are well stocked at right-back, with summer signing Bacary Sagna backing up Pablo Zabaleta. Arsenal are in much greater need in the position, and their mooted move for the player makes much more sense.

The Italian transfer site also suggest that the English champions could offer Matija Nastasic, the Serbian defender who has fallen down the pecking order at the Etihad, in part exchange.

Juventus would presumably have to pay Man City as part of the deal. Nastasic is a talented 21-year-old, while Lichtsteiner is a 30 year old with 6 months left on his contract.

Arsenal will be keen to strengthen their defence in January, as the injury crisis they are suffering at the back risks ruining their season.
