Gameiro’s season is over after scans confirmed he ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament during the Olyroos’ 1-0 win over South Korea.

The 21-year-old, the Sky Blues’ top scorer this season, reportedly went for scans on Thursday morning and was told of the news.

“The kid is absolutely devastated,” Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold said on Thursday.

“I’m confident Corey will come back even stronger than before, he’s got the mental strength to do that, but it’s could be a long layoff and I just wish him a speedy recovery.

“The medical staff at the FFA rang me straight after the game and they’re 80 percent certain [it’s the ACL].”

Gameiro has been in stunning form, scoring 12 goals in pre-season as well as two in the A-League.

He also scored in the Olyroos’ 2-2 draw with Brazil last Friday.
