The 23-year-old is making quite an impression for the Saints this season, helping the side to second in the Premier League table with some all-action displays down the right-hand side and earning his first two caps for England in games against Slovenia and Scotland this week.

Liverpool could certainly do with a player of Clyne’s quality at right-back, with Glen Johnson looking past his best this season and heading for a likely exit at the end of the season as he nears the end of his contract.

Clyne could be an ideal replacement for Johnson, having shown himself to have all the qualities to play for a top side with his great all-round play this season, looking solid at the back and also getting forward to score two goals in all competitions – one against Liverpool at Anfield on the lopening day of the season, and one long-range screamer to win the game away to Arsenal in a Capital One Cup third round tie.
