The 21-year-old has been impressing in the second tier of English football and has already attracted the likes of Chelsea, Everton, Manchester United and Newcastle United.

The Blues were believed to be leading the race for Mings having identified the Englishman as the ideal long-term successor to captain John Terry.

However, Arsene Wenger is keen to beat his London rivals to the youngster as he looks to bolster his defence in the January transfer window.

The Gunners started the 2014/15 season with only six recognised first team defenders and long-term injuries to Mathieu Debuchy and Laurent Koscielny has reduced the squad to its bare bones.

Wenger has been given £20m by the hierarchy at the Emirates Stadium and would be willing to sanction half of that to land Mings.

The 65-year-old has sent scouts to watch the defensive ace in action and they have been sufficiently impressed enough to recommend that the Frenchman signs him.

Mings currently operates as a left-back for the Tractor Boys, but is viewed as a natural central defender.

Wenger is also interested in Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk.
