Welbeck has lead the line in eight Premier League games for the Gunners, since moving to the Emirates Stadium from United in September.

However, he is likely to be relocated to accommodate the return of French forward Olivier Giroud, who recently recovered from a broken leg.

“Welbeck can play in different positions up front,” Wenger told reporters. “I don’t think that will stop him from scoring.

“Welbeck had chances the other night [playing for England] when he played on the left. He looks comfortable on the left because he knows what to do.

“One of the main reasons he came here was that he wanted to play. It was not a condition [to play as a central striker].”

On the possibility of a Welbeck and Giroud partnership, Wenger added: “We can adapt our formation so they can play together.”

Welbeck has scored just twice in domestic competitions for Arsenal, although he did bag a Champions League hat-trick against Galatasaray in October.
