United have struggled when using the 3-5-2 formation this season, but defensive injuries may have forced the manager’s hand.

With a number of first team defenders injured at the moment, van Gaal has struggled to field a four man back line. It’s looking likely that an extremely inexperienced defence will be deployed, with Chris Smalling lining up alongside Tyer Blackett and Paddy McNair.

Summer signing Luke Shaw was expected to be fit for the game after picking up an injury on international duty, but he hasn’t been passed fit and will miss this crunch Premier League clash.

Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal side are also ravaged with injuries at the moment, but with a number of key players passing late fitness tests they are arguably looking in far better shape than Louis van Gaal’s side at the moment.
