The Brazilian defender has been told that his opportunities at the club would be limited next season, with Martin Montoya and Douglas set to become Luis Enrique’s first and second choice right-backs.

This has come as something of a shock to many, as Alves has made nine appearances so far this season in La Liga, while Montoya and Douglas have played just 164 minutes between them.

The flamboyant star should have plenty of suitors come the end of the season, with Manchester United heavily linked to him on a number of occasions.

United are struggling defensively at the moment, and a right-sided defender is definitely high up on their wish list. Alves will be 32-years-old by the end of the season though, so any prospective deal may only be on a short term contract.
