Dutch sources claim that Louis van Gaal has ‘shaken hands’ on a deal to bring in the 24 year old who is feeling his way back from a long time out with a knee injury.

The AS Roma man is a player van Gaal knows well from his time in charge of the Dutch national team set-up and would certainly provide an injection of quality in the centre of the park.

Stadio Olimpico boss Rudi Garcia would be loathed to lose Strootman but will be buoyed by the form his side have shown without the PSV Eindhoven man during his injury lay-off.

AS Roma sit in second spot in Serie A and much like last term the Giallorossi are the only side effectively challenging giants Juventus.

Van Gaal brought in Ander Herrera and Daley Blind as part of a midfield re-shuffle though Strootman offers the qualities of two midfielders in one.

The rangy Dutchman has the defensive attributes akin to an enforcer whilst also being able to drive forward to support the attack whilst providing a real threat in the final third.
