Arsene Wenger has come under a lot of criticism this term, but none probably as damning as this from Daily Mail journalist Adrian Durham…

Following the Gunners’ 1-2 loss at home to Manchester United at the weekend, their defeat to Swansea before the international break, and their throwing away of a three goal lead at home to Anderlecht; many fans have run out of patience, but few have compared the title winning Frenchman to Eastenders character Ian Beale.

Durham wrote…

“Arsene Wenger has become like Ian Beale – he’s got nothing left. And when the long-serving EastEnder lost the lot – business, home and self respect – he went a bit crazy.

“Frenchman Wenger might as well jump on a tube to Walford East and go looking for Phil Mitchell’s shoulder to cry on. In fact, Walford Town is probably more the Frenchman’s level tactically.”

If you’re looking for what the ‘nothing left’ refers to, you probably won’t have seen this (often ‘Vined‘) clip from the London soap opera…

Wenger has also recently come under criticism from somebody who matters quite a lot more; 30% club shareholder Alisher Usmanov – which will likely be worrying the veteran manager much more than Durham’s irritating comparisons.

Whether Durham’s sentiment, that Wenger is running in borrowed time, is true, is perhaps not so unbelievable…

Arsenal play Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League this week, and will be desperate to pick up their first win in four matches, and alleviate some of the pressure Wenger is currently under.
