Brendan Rodgers has been without England man Daniel Sturridge for much of the current campaign and neither Rickie Lambert or Mario Balotelli have impressed since moving to Anfield and as such there is very urgent need to bring in a fresh striking option in January.

28 year old Colombian Jackson Martinez has been scoring goals for fun in Portugal and could be tempted by a move to the Premier League, not least as his side lost their Primeira Liga title to arch rivals Benfica last term.

Martinez is said to prefer an exit next summer but Liverpool will launch a £30m bid when the transfer window reopens.

Liverpool have suffered three successive Premier League defeats and their Champions League challenge hangs in the balance and Brendan Rodgers is under pressure despite the successes of last term.

Jackson Martinez has bagged a very healthy 72 goals in 107 appearances for FC Porto.
