Reports suggest things could have been very different however, with United twice approaching the Italian in an attempt to lure him back to the Premier League.

Sir Alex Ferguson initially wanted then PSG boss to be his replacement when he retired in 2013, with the Scotsman even travelling to Paris told hold talks with Ancelotti.

The offer to join Real Madrid was too good to turn down however, and he made the switch to Spain.

United attempted to land the Los Blancos man a second time after David Moyes was sacked, but with Ancelotti once again turning them down, they eventually opted for current boss Louis van Gaal.
