UEFA has released the nominations for its European Team of the Year, and has named the four goalkeepers in contention for a place in the side.

The world’s best keeper is a rarely debated subject anymore, due to the jaw-dropping form of Germany and Bayern Munich no.1 Manuel Neuer throughout the calendar year. While he’s the heavy favourite to earn a place in the side, Chelsea man Thibaut Courtois is the man likely to run him closest.

The 22-year-old Belgian enjoyed a superb season with Atletico Madrid in 2013/14, and his form helped them win La Liga, and reach the Champions League final, too. Since returning to parent club Chelsea, he has yet to lose a match this season.

Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon also makes the list, having barely lost a Serie A match all year, while Sevilla stopper Beto is a surprise list entrant – having been largely faultless for the Spanish club in 2014.
