Mulvey was dismissed by the on Sunday, just six months after winning the title and signing a two-year contract extension.
“You have to have a laugh at the excuses that are made to get rid of a coach who’s been very successful at a club,” Merrick is quoted as saying by AAP.
“But that’s football for you.”
Mulvey was axed after Brisbane’s terrible start to its title defence, but Merrick said he still couldn’t understand the reasons behind his sacking.
“They talked about justifying it by reviewing last year – he won the premiership, he won the championship, he was coach of the year.”
