Bayern arrive at the Etihad having already qualified from Group E after winning their first four games of the tournament, but City’s passage is far less certain.

But former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder Alonso – who celebrates his 33rd birthday today – says Bayern are determined to end City’s hopes of reaching the knock-out stages because they could prove dangerous opponents if they get through.

“City are in a difficult position but of course they are a threat,” he said.

“If they go through over two legs they can beat any team in Europe. We may have qualified already but we are coming here to win.”

“Football is not about mathematics,” he added. “There is not a pre-determined formula, that when you are earning more you are winning more.

“You can try to buy success, but there are big surprises in football. And as well as that, you’ve got to do things properly and normally in football.

“If you do things properly, you will have success. What happened that year with Liverpool was a really a great surprise.

“We enjoyed it, but it was very different from what is going on Manchester City.”
