The Aston Villa forward, who signed for the Midlands club for £18m in January 2011, has not started a Premier League game this season, although he has made seven substitute appearances.

Bent, 30, could make his Brighton debut against Fulham on Saturday.

Brighton are currently above the Championship relegation zone on goal difference alone.

The Seagulls have scored just 20 goals in 18 league games this season, with defender Lewis Dunk their leading marksman with four goals.

Bent has not played in the second tier of English football since the 2004-15 campaign, in which he netted 19 times for Ipswich Town.

His goalscoring record in the past three seasons has been pretty poor – just 12 goals in 61 games in all competitions for Villa and Fulham.

However, he bagged 11 goals in 2011-12, 23 in 2010-11, 25 in 2009-10 and 17 in 2008-09.
