The midfielder came off the bench for his 151st appearance in the Catalan team’s match against APOEL Nicosia on Tuesday night. His Red Devils counterpart played the same amount of games in a career that spanned over two decades.

The 34-year-old is obviously odds on to break the record now, as his Welsh rival has retired. He could go ahead if he either starts or come off the bench in his side’s game against Paris St Germain on the 10 December.

This record includes matches from the qualifying rounds of the tournament. Xavi also holds the record for without qualifying rounds with 145 games, although Giggs is not as close. The now Old Trafford assistant manager is replaced by Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas as a competitor for this record.

The Galactico will equal his rival on Wednesday if he plays against Basel. As goalkeepers tend to have longer careers than outfield players, he could well take both records by the end of his playing days.
