According to the Daily Mail the previously injured duo got through the Red Devils’ reserve match with Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday night, which they duly won 5-0.

Herrera has been sidelined with a broken rib, but managed to play the full 90 minutes, whilst Evans was on the pitch for 64 minutes as he too edges nearer to a first team return.

This will be music to the ears of van Gaal, who has been having to deal with something of a fitness crisis among the ranks at United in recent times and both players will be welcomed back with open arms.

It will be particularly pleasing for the Dutchman to have Evans available once again, with the back line having been somewhat makeshift due to injuries.

During the weekend’s 2-1 Premier League victory over Arsenal van Gaal opted for a 3-5-2 formation once again, with Chris Smalling joined by youngsters Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair in a back three.

Although the visitors beat the Gunners on Saturday it was far from a convincing performance and Herrera will also be useful to have in order to shore things up in midfield.
