Everton travel to face Wolfsburg on Thursday evening, in what will be a battle for top spot in the pair’s Europa League group. The Toffees will know that a draw will keep them top, and make sure that they’re still favourites for the easier draw in the next round.
They will have a tough assignment in Germany though. Since the Blues beat them 4-1 at Goodison Park back in their first game in the competition, manager Dieter Hecking’s side have gone on a run of six wins in eight games which has seen them rise to second in the Bundesliga.
Meanwhile Everton have had mixed results, leaving them currently two points off fourth spot in the Premier League. However they are still unbeaten in Europe.
The Merseyside club has some injury problems at the moment, with Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin the only two fit senior centre-backs as Antolin Alcaraz and John Stones are both out for extended periods. Leighton Baines is also likely to miss out, leaving either Tony Hibbert or Luke Garbutt to deputise. Gareth Barry, Steven Pienaar, Bryan Oviedo, Steven Naismith, and Darron Gibson complete the injury list.
The German side have very little in terms of injuries, with Patrick Ochs their only player definitely ruled out.
