Arsenal’s January Raid For Centre-Back Ruined By Decisive Juventus

Arsenal’s ponderous transfer policy has been outflanked once again…

Once again it looks like Arsenal will be missing out on one of their main targets, and they have nobody to blame but themselves.

Fabian Schar is a young and extremely talented centre-back and one that the Gunners have been linked with repeatedly in the last year.

But now Italian paper Tuttosport are reporting that Serie A champions Juventus have stolen a march on the Gunners, and have sealed a deal for the Swiss international – whose contract expires in the summer.

Schar is a calm and dependable defender, with good ability on the ball and decent pace too. He would be the perfect rotation option to play in the North Londoners’ back-line, and could be the long-term replacement for Per Mertesacker.

Instead it seems he will be heading to Turin to be Giorgio Chilellini’s stand-in.

The North London side appear to have wanted for the FC Basel youngster’s contract to expire rather than pay for him in January, while Juve are prepared to pay up front for a player who they hope will more than repay the small sum.

The defender is part of the impressive Basel side that has defeated so many English sides – including Liverpool – in the last few years. He played on Wednesday as the Swiss side held Real Madrid to just one goal.
