The French international centre-back is a highly rated young talent, having made his breakthrough in Real’s senior side in the last few years and putting in a series of superb displays.

However, some injury problems have seen him fall behind Sergio Ramos and Pepe in the club’s pecking order this season, with Carlo Ancelotti favouring the experienced duo over the 21-year-old.

Varane is keen to ensure he continues playing regularly as he seeks to progress in his career, and it may be that he will consider an exit from the Bernabeu to help make sure that happens.

United now look to be his main suitors as January approaches, with van Gaal keen to strengthen at the back after an unconvincing start to the season and poor defensive displays.

Varane would surely make an excellent signing for the Red Devils, who also raided Real Madrid for the signing of Argentine winger Angel Di Maria this summer, and it may be tempting for the youngster to follow his old team-mate to Old Trafford this season.
