United had negotiated a clause to sign on-loan Falcao from Monaco at the end of the season for £43.5million, but the Colombian had been dogged by injuries at Old Trafford – and Louis van Gaal wants to get rid.

And according to reports on both sides of the channel the Red Devils have targeted the big Uruguayan as the ideal replacement for the crocked loan star and will cough up the cash to land his services.

Cavani was linked with a move to Old Trafford (amongst other destinations) over the summer, but ended up staying in the French capital. But those rumours have since resurfaced after it is believed that he is unhappy at the club.
