Gunners boss not looking for defensive additions.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is set to confuse his fans once again after his latest admission saying that he will not be signing a new centre-back in the January transfer window as he is happy with Nacho Monreal filling in at the heart of the defence, according to the Daily Express.

Wenger said at the club’s AGM last month that he wanted one more player in the summer and that he will rectify that in January.

Gunners fans have been adamant that Wenger needs to ease the club’s defensive crisis in the new year, but he has insisted that the likes of Calum Chambers and even Nacho Monreal are more than capable as back ups for regular pairing Pre Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

“Monreal is playing very well, he doesn’t get enough credit for the quality of his performances because against Manchester United, against Dortmund, he was in the top three for me,” said Wenger, whose side travel to West Bromwich Albion today for the early kick-off.

“You have to give me some credit because I’ve seen that he can play there. I tested him before the season started at the Emirates tournament and I could see that he understands well, he reads the game well.

“After that there is the question mark ‘Can he cope with the physicality of this job?’ because he hasn’t got the biggest frame but game by game, he becomes more aggressive because he understands the game, he can get in front of people.

“Koscielny can be partnered with Monreal now, or with Mertesacker, I don’t rule that out. He can be as well with Chambers, when Debuchy comes back and we have everybody here, we have plenty of potential opportunities.”
