It’s many people’s favourite race of the year. It guarantees drama and a very classy winner.
The Hennessy Gold Cup run at Newbury is a race to savour.
It’s a unique race in that it’s the only real chance top-class second-season chasers get to race off a workable mark and it is run at one of the best jumping tests in the country.
Some of the very best chasers have won the Hennessy, including Denman and Bobs Worth in recent years, and year on year it serves as one of the best Gold Cup trials of the season.
This year’s renewal looks well up to standard and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if we see a horse win that goes onto double up in the big one on the Friday of the Cheltenham Festival.
Many Clouds is a horse that look earmarked for a crack at some big prizes.
Last year he was unlucky not to win the Reynoldstown at Ascot as was done by a brilliant ride from Barry Geraghty on subsequent RSA winner O’Faolains Boy, whilst giving him 4lb.
He was then brought down when travelling well in the RSA and on all known form he would have been involved in the finish without that fall. This season he put in one of the best three mile jumping performances to down Holywell and Eduard at Carlisle.
However, that has meant his handicapped has been upped because of his exploits and although he has huge claims there is one horse that is even more well handicapped – that horse is Fingal Bay, who can be backed at 10/1.
Even off a mark of 153, Fingal Bay has the credentials to hose up in this famous handicap. He has had his problems and has brilliantly managed by trainer Phillip Hobbs, who has always been of the opinion that this horse was among the best he has ever handled.
That certainly looks the case judging by his form when beating subsequent Neptune Novices and Arkle winner Simonsig over hurdles a couple of seasons back.
Things haven’t got straight to plan since but he was back with a bang over hurdles at the Festival to win a hot renewal of the Pertemps Final, where classy novice Southfield Theatre and Grand National winner Pineau De Re were beaten.
Switching back to fences off this kind of mark, it’s hard not be excited by a horse that has everything needed for a three mile chaser. Get on.
