The 28 year old’s Marseille contract expires next summer and by all accounts the Stade Vélodrome side are unwilling to meet the striker’s contractual demands, leaving a January move all the more likely.

Arsene Wenger retains an interest in Gignac despite the successful starts new signings Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck have made to their Arsenal careers.

Olivier Giroud has also returned from injury and with Wenger able to call upon the likes of Lukas Podolski, Theo Walcott and youngsters Yaya Sanogo and Joel Campbell it’s not immediately obvious as to why the north London club would need to sign another striker.

Gignac has been in superb form this term with his tally of 11 goals making him the joint top scorer in the French top tier.

The experienced attacker is into his fifth season at Marseille and has netted 65 goals in 161 appearances for OM.
